Giant Squids

History has seen countless sightings of abnormally large squid and octopi.

Originally a mere myth, giant squids have been proven to be real in the past two centuries. They live in the deep ocean and grow up to 13 meters long from tip to tentacle. An even larger and more elusive variant- the colossal squid- has also been discovered recently. It's believed to grow up to an extra meter on that of the giant and lives deep in the Antarctic ocean.

The size of these squids- although impressive- has ignited questions from more paranormal-attuned minds. They simply aren't nearly as big as they were made out to be in myth. This has led some to believe that bigger squid species are yet out there. Of course it's more likely that sailors just tell tall tales, but that's not nearly as fun.

The most popular mythical version of the giant squid is known as the Kraken. The Kraken originates from Norwegian folklore. It is often mistakenly associated with Greek myth- likely due to its name being given to a sea monster in the 80s Clash of the Titans film. It was said to be the size of a small island and capable of grabbing ships, as well as devastating sailors by the whirlpool it made by quickly diving into the ocean below. However these early Kraken stories were described as more crablike in appearance, and the octopus or squid appearance came later in the 1800s.
