Who is Grinfiend?

A look into the mind virus superspreader.

No matter where we look in regards to The Dragon, mentions of the same person abound at every opportunity. Grinfiend. Grinfriend. Grinningghoulie. Etcetera. He posts the image everywhere, sends countless emails out, and types in a very uniquely broken way.

He's been doing this for years. He's even visited our forum. Speaking of, his IP seems to change regularly. Not in the sense of something fishy going on tech wise, but as if he were travelling around. He cannot be properly reasoned with, as his means of engagement are incredibly formulaic and simplistic. He's quite possibly the reason we're all in our current predicament, as he is the one who initially sent Icecreamonkeyfan the chain letters that started our investigation into the matter.

So, who is this guy? There are several theories. I'll detail them below.

  • 1. Grinfiend is simply an identity The Dragon takes in order to facilitate its spread. It is certainly capable of doing this, given its control of whatever medium it's stuck in. Perhaps the IP range changing corresponds with a sort of civilian botnet that it uses to maintain a stable presence outside of its primary victims.
  • 2. Grinfiend is just a guy who has been so broken by The Dragon's curse that he kind of devolved into this strange shell of a man from the forbidden information twisting him, not unlike a fallen angel. Perhaps he was there for the tragedy that The Dragon embodies, or something else fucked up happened that tied him to it in a way that exempted him from the slow decline. This is GM's favourite.
  • 3. Grinfiend is an actual Fallen Angel. Far simpler to 2, but has some issues. Fallen Angels give the information in person and have specific targets so they can feed later. Doing it online would miss the point. Additionally, a weird pale, gaunt homeless man blends in more than a pale, gaunt inhuman entity.
  • We believe the most likely explanation is 2. Option 3 has too many issues and Grinfiend's behaviour isn't really The Dragon's MO. How did this happen? What the hell does The Dragon represent? We don't know. But if Grinfiend is a physical entity, it's essentially a direct physical extension of The Dragon's will at this point. That's dangerous. Too dangerous to ignore. We aren't even too sure how we could prepare if it decided to attack us for some reason, as The Dragon could presumably just affect our perception. The best we can say at this time is just to be vigilant, and stay tuned for future updates on the situation.
