Demons
Incorporeal entities that reach out through hallucinations and subconscious influence to drive humans to sin.
Demons lack the power required to break into the physical world but desperately desire outside influence. They are known to reach out during altered states of consciousness. When the mind is altered enough to make the soul's perception bare more of the weight, it brings an individual closer to Hell's level of existence. Most demonic sightings happen late at night or inside dreams for this reason. After a human has been contacted this way, demons are also known to influence them subtly to sin through the subconscious. This is done out of necessity, due to the otherwise weakened connection.
These entities are horrifically ancient in concept, with reports of entities lining up with modern conceptions of demons dating back to nearly the dawn of civilization. It is said that- being trapped in Hell- demons have great need of a physical vessel for the sake of power and temporary relief. Humans are the only lifeform typically capable of being usurped by a demon due to the malleability of their minds and the capability for sin. As demons are born of negative emotions like misery and malice, they can only exist in a suitably negative vessel. They typically reach out to those suffering from vices already, are in a vulnerable time in their life, or are otherwise suffering from mental illness. Even a single demonic attack can damage the mind enough to deteriorate perceptions of reality, leaving the victim open to further demonic attacks and long lasting mental struggles.
In terms of appearance, it is thought that demons exist in different types and have high variance between individual features. Common traits include horns, rotting wooden growths and roots, a serpentine or beastlike appearance, misshapen teeth, and a lack of lips. The color red is also exceedingly common. They are often said to appear similarly to regular apparitions and shadow people. This is to such an extreme extent for the latter that it's up for debate if shadow people are really just a type of demon. Depending on how delirious the witness is, the form of the haunting demon will become closer to its actual appearance. It is said that these forms will become more and more clear in the leadup to the end of days, until they become completely tangible at long last due to the mass degradation of the greater human psyche.
