Seven Princes of Hell
The Seven Princes are a group of powerful demons embodying the major sources of human misery.
The Seven Princes are
viewed as the aristocracy of Hell in certain sects of modern occultism- those
who manage the infernal plane while The Beast exists in constant, churning
agony. Within themselves is a loose hierarchy based mostly on seniority and
scope of domain. This increments in groups of two until the seventh prince,
who has loose dominion over the rest.
The princes are as follows.
The Societal Duo
- Injustice - The misery of karmic failure. Gains power from crime and
wrongful conviction. Every time one says "it's not fair," you're giving
power to them. Ironically lives in torment due to a love for justice of all
forms. Said to venerate vigilantism and enforce punishment on the wicked in
Hell.
- Conquest - The misery of losing autonomy. A rather enigmatic and violent
entity. Despite its rage, it's more defined by sheer persistence and
insidious scheming. Venerates fallen soldiers in name only, but holds true
affection for the greedy in positions of power or with the means to take
them. Enforces order in Hell, tormented by the Sisyphean task this poses.
The Internal Duo
- Disease - The misery of declining
physicality. Obtains power from the dying and ill of the world. A very
solitary entity, it venerates the germaphobes and clean of the world,
though only out of envy for the lifestyle it can never have. In times of
relative health, it becomes catatonic for the point of immobility.
Maintains the constitution of Hell's denizens from the comfort of a
withered old cot.
- Disorder - The misery of declining
mentality. Obtains power from the tormented and traumatized. Just as
solitary as Disease, they venerate inconsistently between abusers and
victims, with warped logic justifying any given decision. Extraordinarily
unstable, but fanatical in whatever beliefs they hold at that moment.
Tormented by themselves, they give Hell the ability to grant madness to
man.
The Physical Duo
- Fate - The misery of predestination.
Obtains power from the trapped and those born to die. Perhaps the most
enigmatic of the princes. Claimed to be something of a cruel trickster who
often goes against the hierarchy who is left powerless to stop him. Even
the seventh prince cannot void his actions. Some sources claim him to be a
dark angel of sorts, while others say he is something else entirely. Said
to shape objects like clay and place them in the perfect position for
tragedy to occur.
- Insignificance - The misery of
worthlessness. Obtains power from the death and injury of those to
inexplicable natural events. Natural disasters are the fruit of this
entity. It feels little, but venerates the misfortunate out of a vague
sense of kinship. After all, as tiny as they are, they are all part of a
larger whole, just as it is. It believes that it accepts its own place,
but it does not. This is its torment.
The Abyssal Prince
- Abyss - The misery of darkness. This
entity is cloaked in mystery but holds great power. Just as all things
came from nothingness, so too can they return to it. The Abyssal Prince's
domain is said to be so strong that it is the root cause for the
instinctual fear of the dark. When one fears the unknown in the shadow of
their open closet- when one is stabbed in the streets on a clouded
midnight- that is the command of the final prince. One can never know who
it venerates, but to pursue contact is assuredly playing with the
reflection that fire casts.
The princes are known to
have names beyond their titles, but the exact names of them are supposedly
kept unknowable by the angelic forces in order to keep the effect of their
sigils to a minimum. If one could summon them, the effects could be
disastrous. This has not stopped countless from attempting such, though, and
certain names have been claimed to belong to certain princes. The most
commonly accepted name is that of Fate, though he is said to not answer
summons.
